WalMart Crime Reports Online

America is amazing! Just visit this site (not a spoof by the way), enter a US postcode, and see police reports related to the nearest WalMart stores. The idea I guess is to highlight that criminals like WalMart, or are they trying to prove that WalMart creates more crime in general?

The stores average 5 incidents a week on average...

Marijuana not a gateway drug

Marijuana is not a “gateway” drug that predicts or eventually leads to substance abuse, suggests a 12-year University of Pittsburgh study.
The study only looks at some minor aspects of this, but the headline is welcomed. To my mind, all addictions are a combination of the following:

- genetic and life-so-far disposition
- availability
- peers
- response to symptoms

If your parents or grandparents were addicts of any kind, it's more likely you will be as well. If you witness their addiction, that can increase/decrease the odds, depending on your reaction.

If you can't get hold of it, you can't use it - so environment is a big factor.

If you are hesitant, but your peers are urging you on, you are more likely to partake.

Hangovers and come-downs can be enough to put you off (I guess that is their biological purpose), but some folk don't care, and keep on keeping on....

That's it. How much you feel the need, how easy it is made for you, and how you react to the side-effects. Which drugs you take comes down to personal preference, not the order of introduction.

Meanwhile, a Californian stoner plans on creating the world's longest joint (3 feet), and it is (medically) legal!

How can it be so cheap?

I'm starting to think that our world is not real, but rather we live in a simulation. As evidence I present to you the impossibility of things coming out of China being so cheap. I think someone should go over there and actually try to witness the entire process of these products being made and shipped to the USA, and check their books!

Example: 5 inch B&W TV , for only $5!

Amazing things you (probably) didn't know

20. Sex workers in Roman times charged the equivalent price of eight glasses of red wine. (that's about $AU40 in a pub)

26. Each [UK] person sends an average of 55 greetings cards per year.

43. There is only one cheddar cheese maker in Cheddar, even though cheddar is the most popular hard cheese in the English-speaking world.

52. Forty-eight percent of the [UK] population is ex-directory [Australia is only 20%].

55. While 53% of [UK] households have access to a garage, only 24% use them for parking cars.

86. Six million [UK] people use TV subtitles, despite having no hearing impairment.

87. Goths, those pasty-faced teenagers who revel in black clothing, are likely to become doctors, lawyers and architects.

Virtual Real Tennis

This is so weird, and so futuristic, I'm almost speechless. In Second Life you can watch the Australian Open tennis, live. Not on a TV, but recreated using the Second Life system, with avatars replacing the players, and making the same shots seconds after it really happens.

How long before you can buy computers in Second Life that run a program called Third Life?

BTW, obviously it has nothing but novelty value watching it is Second Life instead of at home, unless you can't get it live where you live...

Times Square Shock News - Public Toilets!

Although there are some great things I could tell you about New York, there's a single major stinking bummer - public toilets virtually do not exist. For a city with so many homeless folk, this just means that they defecate and urinate somewhere else, like in alleys, shop fronts & the subway. Lovely!

Now, thanks to the powers of capitalism and advertising, Times Square has some very fancy public toilets, but only temporarily, and only to promote a brand of toilet paper.

Tea & Milk are not a magic cure

Seems the food-combinists might be on to something... although tea can reduce the risk of cancer, it doesn't if you add milk to it!

Poofters have brain malfunction

Not as bad as that, but evidence exists showing that gay men are more likely to be addicts, and more likely to have mental illness. From personal observations I totally agree. Full story here!
