Food

Fish and Chips is many things to many people:

  • England’s 2nd favourite food (after curry)
  • Cultural legacy in places like Australia and NZ
  • Most people like it
  • Affordable
  • Suits being eaten on a beach

If you look, most countries will have it, from the most north or south towns, to the most isolated, from 5 star restaurants in big cities to fast food vans.

It could be described as a food that brings people together.

It is a great excuse to traverse the world, seeking the best, worst and ordinary fish and chips, and the stories of course.

I have already embarked on one of the more extensive fish and chips odysseys, reviews of every fish and chips provider in greater Ballarat

This is purely from observing myself, but it makes sense also 🙂

We have all heard of the Mediterranean Diet. The presumption is the ingredients…

But what if the benefits come from the smell of food cooking.

Italy has a tradition of slow cooking, which means smelling dinner for hours before you get to eat it.

I fast to lose weight. Typically it is simply skipping breakfasts. After a few days it doesn’t bother you, the feeling hungry part.

But I have noticed, the feeling of hunger, the desire of wanting food, can be brought on by thinking about eating, or smelling food. My stomach physically reacts to both stimuli.

Hypothesis: thinking about food makes you feel hungry. Feeling hungry causes your body to eat its fat reserves.

Literally, thinking about food causes you to lose weight.

…once you get past the hard part.

We all eat 3x more than what we actually need. With time and care it is possible to reduce your intake without any loss of function. Ask anyone with a lap-band. They have it easier because they can’t physically eat too much. To do it without surgery probably depends on your mental make-up. But if you can do it, losing weight is easy.

If you already eat the bare minimum required to function the same as anyone else, on 1/3 of the food, then reducing it a little bit more means losing weight. Over 18 months I naturally put on around 5kg (I don’t exercise, and drink a fair bit…). Then I lose in over 2 months by skipping every 2nd breakfast. As someone who only eats when I need to, I am very used to the feeling of hunger. Hunger gives me strength, when I am in the mood.

So if you are lucky that you can, try just eating less each day. When I was a kid it was meat and three veg, plus dessert, every night. Now, a burger and chips is too much food. Anyone who has the willpower to, say, quit smoking, can eat less also. So give it a go!

The fake burger industry is obsessed with the idea being vegan. It is philosophical.

What if it was climate change?

That is a cause that could save our species, rather than being about a philosophy.

The popularity of beef is causing deforestation – fact
Deforestation leads to global warming – fact

Shifting from caged chicken to free range chicken makes beef relatively cheaper – fact?
Creating fake beef from chicken should reduce the demand for beef!
And it would surely be easier to replicate the texture of beef by using another form of meat…

Two parallel worlds. Because either can avoid or trigger the tipping point.

I love vegans, can’t stand militant vegans (there’s a war a’comin’), wish I was vegetarian, love meat, would choose to eat 7 year old mutton over lamb, and love a good argument.

In some places avocados are produced in a way detrimental to bees. Does that make vegans hypocrites? No, they are doing the best they can – they can’t ever be 100% vegan.

I would vote for a totally vegetarian world, but I won’t choose it on my own. I would happily live where you had to kill (and dress etc) what you ate, but those places are rare. So I am like most people in a modern world, with so much other stuff going on – I take the lazy, easy, what I feel like approach to food.

SPECTRUM

The Carnivore > Vegan scale is like sexuality, it is a sliding scale full of confusion, debate and denial. Hopefully we will decide that everyone is on the spectrum somewhere, and there is no right or wrong. Unlike sexuality we can make a conscious choice though, and so your place on the diet spectrum can change. And is more likely to change with education and (perhaps) religion.
